Father’s Day - When & Why it is Celebrated

We all will be celebrating father’s day. Many of us have already planned for the day. Some of us might be sharing special moments of our life, giving precious gifts, asking our father out for dinner and lot more to make his day, to thank their Father for their efforts in raising them and being their constant support and well wisher and to recognize the contribution that fathers and father figures make to the lives of their children.

Happy Fathers Day
But have you ever imagined what is this all about? Why we celebrated it? What is the history and reason behind it? And what should we do on fathers day? I bet most of you haven’t tried to find out these answers yet. No worry! Here I am sharing the answers of all these questions, so that you will go way closer to your father’s heart.

What is it?

As the name say, it’s a day set aside to honor fathers and their fatherhood, to show the paternal bonds and influence of father in the society.

Millions of people each year celebrate Father’s day on this day to feel him special and to show their care and say a “Thanks” for everything he has contributed and given to us. Roses are the Father's Day flowers: red to be worn for a living father and white if the father has died.

When it celebrated?

Father’s Day celebrated from February to June on various parts of the world depending on the country. Casually it’s the Third Sunday in June in most of the countries including United States of America, India, etc.

History behind it?

The history about fathers day is too old and ancient. About 4,000 years ago a boy named Elmusu wished his Babylonian father good health and a long life by carving a Father's Day message on a card made out of clay and with that the tradition of having a special day honoring fathers has continued across the world.

Sonora Smart, who has been raised by her father after her mother’s death, thought of the idea for Father's Day while listening to a Mother's Day sermon in 1909. Sonora's father was born in June, so she chose to hold the first Father's Day celebration in Spokane, Washington on the 19th of June, 1910.

In 1924 President Calvin Coolidge announced the third Sunday in June as Fathers Day. President Nixon, in 1972, established a permanent national observance of Father's Day to be held on the third Sunday of June.

What should you do on fathers day?

You can gift him mobiles, laptops, ties etc to make him happy. But still you don’t need to buy costly and fancy gifts to show your love and care, perhaps make something unique and special with your hand like a collage to show something special he has done for you and let him know that it means a lot in your life. You can even take him out for a dinner with your mother.

Happy Fathers Day..!!
